What is UPT or Urinary Pregnancy Test?

It is an easy, quick, appropriate, and inexpensive urine test that helps diagnose and monitor pregnancy. It looks for the presence of a human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), a specific hormone produced by the placenta, during pregnancy in the urine. HCG can be detected in the urine sample about 5-7 days after a missed period. If you suspect pregnancy, Urinary Pregnancy Test is the test of choice to confirm if you are pregnant or not.

Why take the Urinary Pregnancy Test?

1. Missed Periods: Missed period is the very first indication of pregnancy. Though it may happen due to several other reasons, to confirm your pregnancy status, you need to go for a Urine Pregnancy.
2. Fertility Treatment: If you have been undergoing fertility treatment, you may be asked to take a UPT to check the success of the treatment and the progress as expected.
3. Have Symptoms of Pregnancy: Any woman exhibiting symptoms of pregnancy like missed periods, nausea, fatigue, breast tenderness, etc., may need to take a pregnancy test to confirm her pregnancy status.
4. To Monitor Pregnancy at higher risk of miscarriage or to determine an Ectopic pregnancy.

Limitations of the Test:

Though the UPT is the most common & economical test, allowing individuals to confirm their pregnancy status, it can give Qualitative results only, i.e. the results can be in the format of positive or negative.

Though there are chances of false positive or false negative results due to some reasons, to get a confirmed status of pregnancy, it is advised to follow a Blood test called Beta HCG in addition to UPT to get Quantitative & Reliable results.  

Do I need to go to the lab for a Urinary Pregnancy Test?

You may visit the lab if you wish to do so. Otherwise, you can collect the urine sample at home and send it to the lab.
